IFA 2010 round-up: Sharp

It comes as no surprise that 3D Blu-ray players were appearing left, right and centre at this year’s IFA conference but we wanted to draw your attention to one of the prettiest we’ve seen yet. Sharp’s BD-HP90S is slim, glossy and can stand up straight or lie just as comfortably on its side.

Due on sale in November 2010, the Sharp BD-HP90S produces 3D and 2D Blu-ray pictures, as well as packing in Wi-Fi to grab BD-Live content from the web without any wires.

There’s a USB socket up front too, alongside LED indicators to tell you it’s pumping out pictures in glorious 3D, or in the Aquos “Pure Mode” for enhanced images.

IFA 2010 round-up: Toshiba

Toshiba made a big splash at this year’s IFA conference in Berlin. Not only did the Japanese electronics giant get on board with both the tablet and the 3D TV revolutions, it also found time to unleash some new cameras, a whole new bunch of TV’s and last but certainly not least, its range of Blu-ray Disc players.

The Toshiba BDX3100KB 3D Blu-ray player will hit Europe in October and will allow anyone with a 3D TV to enjoy 3D Blu-ray movies in full1080p/24fps HD resolution. If you’re not yet equipped for 3D, it has introduced an entry level Blu-ray player in the shape of the Toshiba BDX1100KB. It has the same credentials as its bigger brother, minus the 3D aspect.

IFA 2010 round-up: Panasonic

Panasonic’s press conference and booth revealed a wide array of new 3D technology for the home, including 3D camcorders and a streaming service which will deliver 3D content directly to TVs. The company’s Blu-ray Disc highlights included:
Panasonic’s first 3D Blu-ray players
The DMP-BT100 and DMP-BT300 are Panasonic’s first foray into the world of Blu-ray 3D. Both players support Panasonic’s Viera Cast internet service, which delivers video content from the internet directly onto the TV screen.
Blu-ray recorders and PVRs
Panasonic also unveiled a range of Blu-ray devices that can record televised content from terrestrial or satellite broadcasts onto a hard drive or onto a Blu-ray Disc. The recorders feature twin tuners to allow recording of two channels simulatneously, and come with either 250GB or 500GB hard drives.
Blu-ray home cinema systems
Finally, the company also announced two new 5.1 channel full HD 3D Blu-ray home cinema systems, and a new Blu-ray soundbar.

Philips 3D Cinema 21.9 Platinum
Cinema fans everywhere will be jumping for joy at the latest news from Philips, who yesterday announced its 3D Cinema 21.9 display. The LED backlight technology makes for an extremely pleasant viewing experience, and although the set itself is 59-inches, the design is sleek and slimline and would make a welcome addition to your living room.

Philips releases its latest Blu-ray Disc player
Philips also revealed the latest addition to its Blu-ray player range with the introduction of the new BDP-9600 Blu-ray player. IFA 2010 round-up: Sony

Yesterday, Sony held its press conference at IFA 2010. Sony CEO, Howard Stringer, made several announcements in his keynote speech, and as expected 3D was the main focus –  with the entire press conference being filmed in 3D. Here’s a lowdown of some of the news: 
Sony showcases prototype 3D Vaio Laptops
The 3D Vaio Laptop prototypes on show at IFA (although not on-sale until at least 2011) boasted fast-response LCD screens displaying up to 240fps which give greater 3D quality. The 3D laptops will have full HD resolution and use the frame-sequential 3D display method to deliver full HD images to each eye via active shutter glasses.

PS3 3D will be available in October
Sony also announced that PS3 will be getting the ability to play 3D Blu-ray discs by the end of October, a little later than the original September timeframe. Although no official date was given, PS3 owners will no doubt be excited by the news. Pocket-Lint has more details.
3D projectors offer the ultimate home cinema experience
Sony announced the VPL-VW90ES , a 3D home projector for the ultimate movie fan. The projectors, which work with Sony’s active glasses technology (found in the Bravia television range) offer Full HD 1080p 3D projection, and handle 2D to 3D conversion. Gizmodo has a closer look.

Samsung had plenty to show at IFA this year, including new laptops, notebooks and an iPad rivalling tablet PC called the Galaxy Tab. In terms of Blu-ray related announcements, these are the highlights:

BD-C8900 3D Blu-ray player

The BD-C8900, already the recipient of an EISA Award, is the first 3D Blu-ray player to include a digital video recording function. With a 500GB hard drive on board, the player will allow recording of TV programmes directly or onto a Blu-ray Disc. I4U has more details.

The world’s largest HD 3D LED TV

Samsung also showed off the LED C8000, what it calls the world’s largest HD, LED, 3D television. The perfect complement to the above BD-C9800 3D player, the 65-inch C8000 is Wi-Fi enabled and includes support for the growing Samsung Apps platform. Pocket-Lint has more details.

Blu-ray Disc Association to attend this year’s IFA conference in Berlin

Next week the annual IFA conference will take place in Berlin. IFA is the world’s leading business event for consumer electronics and home appliances products and this year it will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Attracting industry representatives from all over the world, this trade event serves as a global information and business platform, and as you might expect, Victor Matsuda and Graham Heaton from the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) will be there. There are no formal announcements planned, but if you have any questions for Victor or Graham let us know.

Blu-ray movies on the go with Samsung’s first portable Blu-ray 3D Player

Samsung portable 3D Blu-ray playerSamsung has announced its first portable Blu-ray 3D Player, which allows you to watch your favourite Blu-ray Discs on the move, or 3D movies when connected to a 3D TV.

The BD-C8000 has built in Wi-Fi, a 10.3-inch screen and a three hour battery life.  Priced at $499, it is available now in the US.

A European release date hasn’t been confirmed, but for more details on the player, Gadget Blog has the details.

THX and BluFocus launch Blu-ray 3D certification

THX BluFocusTHX has this week announced a new certification for Blu-ray 3D that has been jointly developed with BluFocus, one of the Blu-ray Disc Association’s official testing labs.

The certification will measure 3D picture quality, interoperability and the physiological effects of 3D. Discs that meet the criteria will be able to use the dedicated logo (above) on disc packaging.

To achieve the AV certification, discs need to demonstrate that original master video and audio are maintained. The C certification refers to all the 3D elements on a disc, including characters, graphics and subtitles, while the I certification judges interoperability.
